20 species of orchids at the campsite

In our eco-camping in Ariege, we wanted to preserve the flora with the help of dry orchid lawns.
Composed mainly of perennial herbaceous plants, dry grass grows on dry, very sunny and nutrient-poor soil. This environment of undeniable ecological interest is one of the last refuges for fauna and flora, threatened daily by human activities. The balance of this ecosystem is fragile, which is why we ask our guests to respect this sensitive area.
More than 20 species of orchids are present on our dry lawns. For example, you can observe the Ophrys Apifera. This delicate orchid takes its name from its similarity to bees. This uncommon perennial species is one of the most advanced plants.
The genus name "Ophrys" found on several orchid species comes from the Greek word "ophrus" which means "eyebrow". This perennial plant was once used to naturally dye hair and eyebrows.
To discover this natural space and observe the flora, the period from April to the end of June is to be preferred. Indeed, spring is the best time to enjoy flowering plants when walking in the sun.
For macro-photo enthusiasts, you can keep wonderful pictures of orchids as a souvenir of your holiday in our nature campsite!
The campsite is classified as a birds shelter

Wildlife protection: committed to the preservation of species, our eco-camping is governed by nature. To protect biodiversity, our main approach has been to become an LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) shelter. The sheep farming of our neighbours, who produce organic lambs, is also a good example.
LPO refuges are the first networks of ecological gardens in France. Registering as a LPO reserve means that we are committed to preserving the local nature.
Thus, in the heart of our campsite in Occitania, we have created a natural area of more than 10.5 hectares. A real paradise for our friends the birds!
You can discover many bird species such as blackbirds, pheasants, hoopoe, nuthatches, juvenile red tails and yellow green woodpeckers.
You will also be fascinated by the majestic griffon vulture, one of the largest raptors in France. Recognizable by its slow and often round gliding flight, its head is entirely covered with white down.
